Thrillist (so called Digital Lifestyle for Men) posted a list of the nation's seven most underrated food cities. While I agree that we are indeed underrated, the list is a bit caddywompus. Houston? Underrated? They've been featured in Bon Appetit ad nauseum for the last several years. Elizabeth Fauerso, chief marketing officer for the Pearl Brewery was asked her opinion, which I again whole-heartedly agree with. Fauerso says, "San Antonio is a really interesting mix of very traditional food experiences -- traditional Northern Mexican and South Texas cuisine, Southern food, more formal experiences at some of the old-fashioned dining and social clubs, and this really vibrant scene of emerging new chefs that are riffing off some traditions and forging into entirely new territories." But, then the listicle goes on to include a photo of the Riverwalk (so much for new territories) and recommend "Beer can fried-chicken at The Monterey, the mezcal/fernet Midnight in Mexico at The Esquire Tavern, lamb osso bucco at Paesanos, and anything from Taco Taco Cafe" (seriously?) without a single nod to the Pearl, The Granary, Cured, Arcade, All the Weissman joints, or anything else in Southtown which we can all agree is blowing up (again). Yes, we're underrated, but this got me thinking...what are the most underrated restaurants/bars in SA? Joints that don't get a lot of love in online or in print but serve solid product and deserve recognition? Is there any particularly great bar that deserves a shout out? Let us know in the comments below and make sure to include why.
