First things first: If a business is located off-Broadway and it’s named The Heights, you’d naturally think it’s located in Alamo Heights, correct? Well, when my best friend and I decided to have one last San Antonio hurrah before he packs up for ATX, we found ourselves a bit lost cruisin’ down Broadway. A few minutes later we found our destination (although there was no sign — management assured us a sign will be installed this week) tucked in the same slighty shady-looking building the Blue Bubble Ballroom calls home.
I admit I should be cutting The Heights a bit of slack since the bar/lounge has been open for less than three weeks. But it’s located outside of 410 and should be called Airport Heights (y’know, to make it simpler to find since the airport is located next door). During our visit we were greeted by the co-owner, Tony Gloria, and given stellar service by our barmaid, who took a shot with us before we headed out the door.
After ordering our drinks we made our way to the most comfortable seats the establishment has to offer — a leather loveseat in the corner of the space (hands-down the most intimate spot in The Heights). The new-leather smell had us in a trance while we listened to some tunes playing over the speakers — we stayed long enough to realize the mix consisted of pole-dancing ditties and radio-friendly rock. Aside from the music, there’s really nothing to keep bored patrons occupied — no pool tables, darts, or even a dance floor. The Heights is adequate for something though: The night we dropped by about 20 people gathered around the bar, and gazed at the sole TV screen.
The décor is still very bare-bones. Take out a few mirrors, slap on some local artwork, add a few funky chairs, and the place will feel less stuffy and more inviting. Also, might we recommend taking out the uncomfortable wood-backboard sofas? They look awkward and are not appealing to sit on at all. Outside, the patio offers a nice chill zone for cigar-toting folks, or your casual secondhand smoker.
As for the drinks, The Heights is surprisingly inexpensive — Dos XX cost $4 and a vodka tonic sets you back a thrifty $2. (They were a bit easy on vodka — a second drink finally hit the spot.)
Since The Heights is brand-spanking-new, we’re anxious to see how it’ll compete with Blue Bubble Ballroom. It’ll be a nice joint for acoustic outfits — just add a pool table, plus a few comfortable seats and it’ll be Alamo Heights-worthy, or at least Airport Heights-worthy.
