Chef John Belvin always knew he wanted to have his own restaurant. Though the initial concept for the shop morphed from burgers to po’ boys, the final result opened last weekend as The South Chicken & Waffles off Callaghan Road.

Belvin chose the name The South about two years ago with the original concept of creating a menu showcasing the Southern part of the U.S. It features iconic dishes such as Orleans oxtail grillades and grits, chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits. Belvin, a Louisiana native, says he grew up in a family where everyone cooks and he’s bringing those traditional family recipes with a little Belvin touch.

Belvin first had idea for the restaurant after seeing a friend’s Facebook post.
“Man, how come San Antonio don’t have anything like this,” and it sparked his brain.

The menu includes starters, all-day brunch, all-day breakfast, and lunch and dinner options with prices ranging from $6 to $22.

For now, Belvin is hanging his hat on the namesake chicken and waffles, the former of which the longtime caterer perfected through the years.

The restaurant rocks modern decor with faux exposed walls and sleek seating and a sprawling patio (perfect for nailing those ‘gram photos on weekends). All 3,000 square feet of it will seat 60 people inside and 12 outside.

The South Chicken & Waffles is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The restaurant is closed Mondays.
