Screens That's a wrap

The low-down on this week's premieres

Based on his own written accounts and experiences in the Gulf War, which can be found in the best-selling book Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles, the Middle East described by U.S. Marine Anthony "Swoff" Swofford are brought to life by Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty) in Jarhead. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Proof) portrays Swofford, who tells of the time he spent as a sniper in the deserts of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait fighting an enemy that was rarely seen. Oscar winners Jamie Foxx (Ray) and Chris Cooper (Adaptation) also star.

Chicken Little (voiced by Garden State's Zach Braff) causes mass hysteria when he mistakes an acorn for a piece of the wild blue yonder. Also lending their voices to the Walt Disney film are Joan Cusak (Ice Princess) as the Ugly Duckling, Steve Zahn (Sahara) as the plump piggy Runt, and Don Knotts (Pleasantville) as Mayor Turkey Lurkey.

Capote tells the true story of author Truman Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as he researches the grisly murders of a Kansas family by two men - one of whom Truman befriends, in a fashion - for the novel that will become In Cold Blood. `See "The indefensible defendant" in this issue of the Current.`

With Good Night, and Good Luck, director George Clooney (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) takes audiences back to the glory days of broadcast journalism, when Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) confronted red-baiter Senator Joseph McCarthy. `See "Bully for America" and "It's all so familiar," October 20-26, 2005.`

In Shopgirl, Saks Fifth Avenue employee Mirabelle (Claire Danes) must choose between Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman), a sweet and lowly musician who she meets in a laundromat, and Ray (Steve Martin), an older, wealthy man.

Fifteen-year-old Helena wishes she could run away from the circus in which her family performs in MirrorMask, scheduled to open this Friday at the Regal Fiesta. Instead she finds herself lost among sphinxes and MonkeyBirds in the Dark Lands.

Local premiere dates for limited-release films are tentative and can change at the last minute. Please check your local theater listings to confirm showtimes.
