That's a Wrap

Hidy-ho good neighbors. Some of you may recall my personally promising to relinquish the Academy Awards talk — and I detest breaking my vows to you — but dammit, this is for an excellent cause. Instead of sitting home this Sunday night in your jammies, throwing socks at your television set every time some undeserving Oscar-winner feigns astonishment and takes the stage, you might consider watching the ceremony in style on one of the Santikos Palladium IMAX’s big screens. It’ll cost you 30 buckaroos, and dirty-laundry hurling is probably forbidden, but 50 percent of the proceeds will benefit the San Antonio AIDS Foundation. Plus you’ll enjoy a buffet, live music, celebrity impersonators, a silent auction, and you can enter to win a trip for two to Hollywood. Back to the box office. This is a big weekend for Virginia Madsen, who stars in both The Number 23 and the Polish twins’ The Astronaut Farmer (remember Northfork? Neither do we). My embarrassing confession is that I desperately want The Number 23 to be brilliant. But there’s that nagging issue of Joel Schumacher directing it, and also that the San Antonio press screening isn’t scheduled in time for me to get a review in on opening week. (And … Why did they give Jim Carrey such ridiculous tattoos?) All suspicious. Anyway, to my mind you can do one of two things, 1) see the movie opening weekend and make Joel Schumacher happy, or, 2) wait until you’ve read my review next week and make me happy. Whose side are you on? It’s your loyal critic vs. the guy who made Flatliners.

Finally, Michael Apted’s Amazing Grace (about the writer of the ubiquitous hymn) will be opening this weekend, on what is, according to Movies.yahoo.com, the film’s limited-release date. God forbid Say-town get anything else on a limited-release date. I wouldn’t have fancied actually seeing The Lives of Others in time for the Oscars. Oops … I did it again.
