Actually … I could just go ahead and stop here, because that’s about it.
But what about our word count?
We could just fill it up with nonsense.
Like what?
We could say: All work and no play makes Ashl …
No, no, no! Precious must at least attempt originality!
And cut! Staging a Gollum-style conversation with yourself (myself) — just pathetic. If you’d only remembered that The Lives of Others — you know, the movie you’ve been whining about wanting to see — is at long last released locally this week, we wouldn’t be in this mess.
Ahem.
On the off-chance you (you) haven’t encountered a 300 preview, the film is director Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same title, in which 300 Spartans take on a bajillion Persians in the Battle of Thermopylae. It will share with Sin City (another Miller adaptation) extreme stylization and, of course, violence galore.
If you’re looking for historical accuracy, look elsewhere. Same goes for plot. If there’s anything the movie has plenty of, however, it’s “dudity” (or so said a fanboy over at Ain’t It Cool News). Nudes for Equal Representation, rejoice. Everyone else, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
While we’re on the topic of 300 and the male physique, check out the Current’s interview with Gerard Butler (aka King Leonidas) on page 18. John DeFore will give us the critical scoop on 300 in next week’s issue.
Next week’s Current will also include Steven Kellman’s review of foreign-language Oscar-winner The Lives of Others (known about the humble Lindstrom flat as Not Another Limited-Release to Bitch About), which will be showing at the Santikos Embassy and at Regal Fiesta starting this Friday.
See the spy drama in its true tongue while you still can, for I have just learned that Others is set for an English-language remake, to be developed by the Weinstein Co., Sydney Pollack, and Anthony Minghella. And you know what that means, Precious … Jude Law.
— Ashley Lindstrom
Local premiere dates for limited-release films are tentative and can change at the last minute. Please check your local theater listings to confirm showtimes.
