10 Songs to Put on Your Texas Christmas Playlist

Whether you’re thankful for H-E-B, Whataburger, Taco Cabana or Bill Millers, the great state of Texas has a little something to offer everyone. So fire up a batch of margaritas, kick up those Cavenders boots, and enjoy some good ol’ Texas jams.

Destiny’s Child, “A “DC” Christmas Medley”

Born and raised in Houston, Destiny’s Child (or more appropriately Beyoncé and friends) give traditional Christmas tunes a major dose of girl power and R&B powered pop.

George Strait, “When it’s Christmas Time in Texas”

When the weathers still lukewarm in the early days of December, it’s safe to say that George Strait could quit his day job to be a weatherman with his spot-on forecast of no snow in San Antonio.

Flyleaf, “What’s This”
Formed in Temple, Texas, Christian rockers Flyleaf tackle the Nightmare before Christmas classic that reminds me more of going down a neighborhood street and spotting that one house with no lights and blow ups.

Buck Owens, “Santa Looked a Lot like Daddy”
Can you imagine the horror of discovering your momma cheating with Santa Clause? But on the bright side, it might help keep you off the naughty list.

Butthole Surfers, “Jingle of a Dog’s Collar”
With sleigh bells backing SA’s notorious Butthole Surfers, the alt-rock song could also be named “Jingle of a Reindeer’s Collar.” If the B-Holes ever made a Christmas album, I predict a new family favorite.

Phil Vassar feat. Ray Benson, “Big Ol’ Texas Christmas”
When “Daddy’s got the brisket smokin’” and “Mama’s soakin’ black-eyed peas,” you know it’s going to be a good, down home Christmas. A little honky-tonk piano never hurts a hoedown, either.

Willie Nelson, “Pretty Paper”
Instantly classic like KFC mash potatoes, “Pretty Paper” is a tale of a homeless man in the middle of the holiday rush. Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, right?

Jeff Carson, “Santa Got Lost in Texas”

The big SC may be many things, but I’ve never thought of him as being a freeloader when he ate Carson’s “beans and bread” and “Drank till the pot was dry.” Who said Santa only likes milk and cookies?

Dolly Parton, “Hard Candy Christmas”
The girls at the “Chicken Ranch” are no strangers to getting hard candy and cash in their stocking, if you know what I mean.

Kinky Friedman, “They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore”
The Jewish cowboy Friedman‘s satirical song was potent enough to piss off both the Jewish community and anti-Semites, but who could hate on a man named Kinky?
