Free De La Soul Downloads for Me, Myself and Everybody!

Valentine’s Day or not, love is in the air because De La Soul is spinning it – for free. You have less than 24 hours to get over to wearedelasoul.com and download their entire catalogue (until noon E.T. Saturday). But know that they warn you on their site: “There are lots of people wanting the music so it might take a few hours!”

The buzz is that this is the only way the group can get their music out on digital platforms. Involving a maze of samples, their songs are just mired in legal issues and sorting out the rights and permissions has been nothing but impossible. (Damn you, Disney!) This is why you can’t find them on iTunes and their Spotify presence is relatively, --er, spotty.

But who cares?! These are the guys who brought a sense of humor to hip-hop and peace sign medallions to MTV fashion. They spun the DNA for the likes of Tribe Called Quest and Monie Love. The 25th anniversary of 3 Feet High and Rising is next month, and as Posdnuos told Rolling Stone:

"It's about allowing our fans who have been looking and trying to get a hold of our music to have access to it... It's been too long where our fans haven't had access to everything. This is our way of showing them how much we love them."

Hands down, Jack Hamilton of Slate has the right idea: let February 14 now be known as De La Soul Day.
