Mixhell: 'Spaces'

The oddest possible side project from Sepultura drummer Igor Cavalera might just be the best: a collaboration with his wife, DJ/singer Laima Leyton, called Mixhell. Funky Latin and club rhythms, assayed by Cavalera himself, blend with sleazy late-’80s dance floor anthems sung by a seductive Leyton (and a handful of carefully selected guests) and an enjoyably everything-but-the-kitchen-sink production job from Gui Boratto that lends the whole affair a lively electro-clash veneer: it all adds up to a surprisingly fun and intense listen. The catchy rave-up “Exit Wound” (the album’s lead single) and Leyton’s show-off piece “The Way” are especially noteworthy.
