Grand Buffet
For the uninitiated, the Pittsburgh group Grand Buffet can best be described as the Ween of indie-rap. Like Ween, Grand Buffet is a duo composed of self-satisfied, white, pop-culture nerds who gave themselves cartoonish pseudonyms and make music for their own amusement, first and foremost. Even song titles such as "Nate Kukla's History of Lemonade" and "Americus (Religious Right Rock)" sound like they belong on God Ween Satan.

GB's recently released compilation, Five Years of Fireworks, finds Grape-A-Don (the group's primary emcee) and Lord Grunge (beat wrangler) shamelessly mixing indictments of right-wing America with third-grade excrement jokes. As with Ween, they feel the need to make a mockery of everything they create, but possess the requisite wit and skill to justify their inspired-nonsense aesthetic.

Grand Buffet is currently touring with San Antonio's favorite son, DJ Jester the Filipino Fist, and their September 29 show should be a formidable showcase for underground hip-hop and dance music. In addition to Grand Buffet and DJ Jester, the five-and-a-half hour spectacle will include Lotus Tribe with b-boy crew Jive Turkeys, San Marcos' Clap Clap, and sonically restless local DJ Theory of Everything. In short, you'll venture from the sublime to the ridiculous, and in the case of Grand Buffet, you might get both at the same time.
