Finish line
It's unlikely that any San Antonio band experienced a more exciting weekend than 10 City Run, which traveled up to Waxahachie for the 10th annual Texas Country Reporter Festival and returned to SA as the grand-prize winner of the "Texas Country Star" contest.
Competing against nine other finalists on Saturday, September 17, the country trio performed two original songs - "City of Angels" and "Memories" - and walked away with the championship. The victory carries with it a one-year recording contract with Universal South Records, home to acts such as Cross Canadian Ragweed and Marty Stuart.
Luckey McClain, veteran drummer for 10 City Run, says the group has spoken by phone with label reps, who indicated they'd like to get the trio in the studio within the next month to work on their Universal South debut CD.
Lone star flow
A Lone Star hip-hop package show scheduled for Sunday, September 25 at Kingston Tycoon Flats has been pushed back to Sunday, October 8. According to Mojoe emcee Charles Peters, the gig, featuring Mojoe, Bavu Blakes, Money Waters, Verbal Seed, and DJ Donnie D, had been originally planned for September 24, but when it was moved to Sunday night, some members of the touring group encountered scheduling conflicts.
Rock 'n' rolas
Texas traditionalists Conjunto Aztlan recently received the honor of having one of their tracks ("Yo soy tu hermano, yo soy chicano") included on the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings CD Rolas de Aztlan: Songs of the Chicano Movement. In recognition of the song's inclusion, Conjunto Aztlan performed at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. on Friday, September 16, along with California singer-songwriter Daniel Valdez. Rolas de Aztlan hit the stores on September 13 and is available at all major retail outlets.
