Music Sound and the Fury

A week on the scene

Former San Antonio filmmaker Jim Mendiola has often documented his love for music, most recently with his 2003 punk-meets-Fiesta mockumentary, Speeder Kills. That film, along with Mendiola’s earlier feature Come and Take It Day, often turns up on Sí TV — an English-language Latino cable television network -as part of the network’s Not So Foreign Filmmakers Showcase.

Girl in a Coma

Further bolstering that connection, Mendiola (currently based in Los Angeles) is working on a pilot for Sí TV called Jammin’, a music show that combines slice-of-life cinema verité with performance footage. For the pilot episode of Jammin’, Mendiola chose to focus on local favorites Girl in a Coma. He’ll take his cameras to the band’s Friday, January 20 show at Sam’s Burger Joint (330 E. Grayson), with a bill that also features the Snags, Doom to Bloom, the Offbeats, and Big Soy. Doors open at 8 p.m. and cover is $5.

The following week, Mendiola will catch Girl in a Coma in the act at New York’s Knitting Factory, for what promises to be a highly intriguing set.

On Sunday, January 22, DJ Jester the Filipino Fist will perform a rare show at White Rabbit (2410 N. St. Mary’s) along with underground hip-hop act Grand Buffet. Jester’s performance will provide an opportunity for local fans to snag a copy of his excellent new CD, Secret Love, which will not be available in record stores until May. It will be the third stop on a tour that also includes rising indie popsters Of Montreal, though not for the San Antonio date.
