A week on the scene

Jazz markets and masked balls

One of the best ideas to hit the local club scene recently is College Radio Wednesdays, a weekly happening at Sam’s Burger Joint which allows the city’s college-radio programmers to put together live showcases. In each instance, a portion of the proceeds benefit college radio.

KRTU’s Nocturnal Transmissions handles the first Wednesday of each month, followed on the rotating schedule by KUIW, P.T. Promotions, and Dee-Mand Entertainment. On Wednesday, April 19, P.T. Promotions presents a triple-bill featuring Circa, The Clint, and Mary Minds. This all-ages show runs from 8 p.m. to midnight. Cover is $5.

While we’re on the subject of good ideas that should be encouraged, it’s worth noting that we’re down to the last few days of Jazz Market, a series of free, daily lunchtime jazz performances in Main Plaza. Jazz Market — jointly sponsored by Alamo Music Center, Krazy Kat, the American Federation of Musicians, and the City of San Antonio — comes to a close with shows by SA Latin Jazz Collaborative (Wednesday, April 19), Joe Posada (Thursday, April 20), and the Bett Butler/Joël Dilley Quartet, with each performance running from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Friday’s concluding Jazz Market will also feature the crowning of this year’s Jazz King and Queen: Kyle Keener and Polly Harrison of Small World.

Finally, with Fiesta kicking off this weekend, we’d like to offer a Fiesta-sanctioned option that makes sense for music lovers: Brave Combo, the reigning rulers of nuclear polka -and probably the only contemporary Denton band which has been around long enough to qualify for the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame- will get some backfields in motion at the 8th annual Incognito Masked Ball at La Villita Assembly Hall. The gig, sponsored by the Urban-15 Group, is scheduled for Friday, April 21, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $17.50. Call 227-5191 for more info.
