BLESS UP
Feelin' irie? On Friday, June 13, the Burning Spear (1011 Ave. B, 223-4423) will feature reggae artist Carlton Pride & Zion. The son of country music legend Charley Pride, Carlton formed his San Marcos-based band in 1995.
In 1997, the band leader was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, as well as assault with a bazooka-sized toy watergun on an unsuspecting pedestrian.
"If a couple of kids want to have a water fight in their backyard, that's fine," San Marcos Police Sargeant Byron Mobley was quoted in The Daily University Star, a Southwest Texas State University publication. "But a person should be able to walk along a street without having water shot at him, especially by a 41-year-old man." Pride was later fined $175 for the assault charge.
Dude's so shrouded in scandal that it's a wonder San Antonio will have a chance to see him. But the humble Burning Spear does not tolerate violence, and water weapons will be checked at the door. (Although, given the recent arson investigation at the local venue, it might not be such a bad thing to have some extra water available.)
PATSY'S PUNK HOUSE
On Saturday, June 14, in true punk form, the Perturbed will play a non-traditional venue, Patsy's Ice House (2602 N. Flores, 733-3815). The all-ages show is free, and will feature opening act Cogswell. The Boston-based band the Profits headline the show.
GET CRACKIN'
The local music scene's favorite punk rock et cetera zine, Firecracker, will feature its long-anticipated Issue No. 13 exclusively online at www.firecrackermagazine.com. The staff "ran into some problems" with the print shop that produced prior issues of the zine, and is currently seeking "a printing company that will meet our needs, be inexpensive, and be nice to us." Interested parties can contact the Firecracker staff at [email protected].
Firecracker's "new and improved" Web site will also feature select material from Issue No. 12, which was released in March and is now out-of-print. The material and updated Web site are expected to be available to readers soon. The staff anticipates putting out a printed version of Issue No. 14 in coming months.
