a week on the scene

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center's annual Holiday Saxophones show has been a seasonal mainstay for years, showcasing some of the best sax players in the area in rare combinations. This year, the Guadalupe has moved the concert up from its traditional mid-December slot to the end of November.

Featured performers include returnees such as George Prado, Jan Halsema, and Spot Barnett. They will be joined by Richard Garcia, Rene Sandoval, Joe Posada, Larry Slezak, and John Sheridan. One of the performance's highlights will be a set by the John Magaldi Saxophone Choir, featuring jams on the work of Charlie Parker and other jazz legends.

The 21st annual Regency Jazz Band's Holiday Saxophones concert is scheduled for Sunday, November 23 at the Guadalupe Theatre (1301 Guadalupe). Showtime is 7 p.m. Tickets are $25, and can be purchased at the Guadalupe Gift Shop, or by calling 351-7787.

Veteran SA rock band Los Mescaleros decided to turn Friday, November 14 into an elaborate test of the theory that a change of scenery can stimulate songwriting inspiration. Busy at work on a CD that they expect to release early next year, the group (which happens to share a moniker with Joe Strummer's final band) made a road excursion to Nuevo Laredo, hoping both to write a new song and to pick up a bottle of Mescal to share with Taco Land owner Ram Ayala. (At press time, the band planned to play the as-yet-untitled, unwritten, and unrehearsed new tune at their November 14 Taco Land gig with Naptown Amplifier Company and the Murdocks.) •
