Wood Cuts The local jazz scene, bolstered in recent months by the emergence of Luna Fine Music Club, should get another boost with the opening of the Jazz Annex, at 7920 Fredericksburg (at the intersection of Fredericksburg and Medical). Christening this intimate new venue will be local smooth-jazz guitarist Charlie Wood, who will perform at the club's grand opening on Friday, May 28 from 8 p.m. to midnight with his band Third Stream. In keeping with this nod to the mellow, Luna will feature its first smooth-jazz concert of the year, with a visit from up-and-coming California saxophonist Jeanette Harris on Sunday, May 30. Call the club at 366-0705 for ticket info. Resting In Naptown A Memorial Weekend live-music highlight for underground-rock followers promises to be a return visit from Naptown Amplifier Co. The Austin band, which specializes in a murky, distorted brand of space-rock, has often earned comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and the early Cure. Their debut CD, The Indiana Waltz, was recorded on a four-track machine with the aid of a drum machine, and they've been working over the last few months on a new disc with the characteristically surreal title, Captain Ahab's Graveside Seafood Stand. They'll be at Taco Land on Friday, May 28, with Hitchhike and Suzy Bravo. I can see for miles While we're on the subject of Memorial Day, there are those among us who'd like to see Miles Davis' birthday recognized as a national holiday, and while that doesn't look like a realistic prospect in the forseeable future, the folks at KRTU (91.7-FM) are doing their part with a week-long lunch series devoted to the monumental trumpeter/bandleader, who would have turned 78 on May 26. On that day, KRTU dropped all normally scheduled programming for a 17-hour Miles blowout, but for those who missed it, the celebration will continue through Friday, May 28 with 11 a.m.-1 p.m. weekday shows in honor of the man who gave birth to the cool.
