Strong Week
Maybe the pre-SXSW flow of musicians on I-35 has something to do with it, but this promises to be an exceptional week in SA for live music. In addition to the seven-night SA Indie Fest — covered elsewhere in this issue and online at Saindie.com, here are some highlights:
Eugene Chadbourne, veteran avant-garde guitarist, part-time music critic, and revered inventor of the electric rake, brings his singular tonalities to the Limelight on Thursday, March 8. Over a 34-year recording career, Chadbourne has collaborated with Henry Kaiser, John Zorn, Fred Frith, and tons of other cult heroes, and even paid tribute to the music of San Antonio native Doug Sahm a year after Sahm’s 1999 death. His guitar is where no-wave, jazz, and bluegrass meet. Chadbourne and Jeff Daniels will be joined at the Limelight by Claude Morgan and the Hix.
Also on March 8, folk-oriented musical-theater ensemble Los Inocentes will play a free show entitled “Corridos Y Polkas” at Buena Vista Theater, located on UTSA’s downtown campus. Their performance will include a mix of modern, self-penned corridos (“El Corrido de Henry B. Gonzalez”) with some traditional classics.
That same night, Austin singer-songwriter Guy Forsyth will celebrate the release of his new CD, Unrepentant Schizophrenic Americana, at Jack’s Patio Bar & Grill.
At a time when Toadies reunion shows are rekindling interest in that brilliant Fort Worth band, Toadies leader Vaden Todd Lewis brings his current project, the Burden Brothers, to town for a full-on rock spectacle at Jack’s on Friday, March 9, with Vallejo opening.
Finally, Nashville iconoclast Bobby Bare Jr. will showcase the eccentric narratives of his new album, The Longest Meow (recorded in 11 hours with 11 musicians!) by making a return visit to Casbeers on Saturday, March 10, with local favorites Snowbyrd and Marcus Rubio opening up.
