Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: Kenny Barron

b&wphotochair

Jazz doesn’t lack for elder statesmen. But there’s few in that crowded field who can claim to have started their careers playing behind Dizzy Gillespie, shared the band stand with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, and Elvin Jones, or put together a discography that reads longer than some Tolstoy novels. Pianist Kenny Barron’s storied career doesn’t stop there: check his soundtrack for Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, or his current teaching gig as head piano professor at Julliard. And five decades later the guy is still restless, as clearly evidenced by the young-gun trio he’ll be bringing to the Carver’s Jo Long Theater. Featuring the explosive Jonathan Blake on drums and the equally kinetic Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass, it’s the kind of powder keg ensemble that should keep Barron on his toes for the night, not to mention the audience. $31, 8pm Friday, Jo Long Theater, 226 N Hackberry, (210)-207-2234, thecarver.org.
