SXSW: 3 questions with Ernest Gonzales, AKA Mexicans With Guns

Tell me about your SXSW shows.

It’s really one massive day. I’m playing Thursday; I’ve got four shows that day. I’m really excited about `the Friends of Friends showcase with Daedalus`, that’s a good show for electronic music in general. It almost seems like this year all the good shows are free. I’ve been looking at all the SXSW shows and they’re kind of lacking this year with electronic music in general. Or maybe it’s just a bunch of new artists that I’m unfamiliar with. I don’t recognize a `lot of` people’s names on the official showcases at least.

Is it safe to say that MWG is gaining in popularity? Your “Highway to Hell” remix with Freddie Gibbs and Bun B was featured on Pitchfork this month.

That track blew up, man. Just this week I noticed that — within a day — it was on Pitchfork, XXL, Fader. It’s kind of cool to watch all that happen. It’s good timing with SXSW this week.

What are your goals for SXSW this year?

Number one, it’ll be a good chance for people from out of Texas to see me perform. Also, there’s a lot of people that I have worked with that I haven’t met yet in person. So it’d be nice to see the face behind the emails. I still haven’t met Freddie Gibbs, really. I’m also hoping to find time to make it to sessions where they talk about licensing. That’s something I’d really like to get my artists more involved with, licensing out to film or video games ... anything to get some revenue to the artists.
