Born just over five years ago, hardcore/metal hybrid Upon A Burning Body has continually served as a model to other bands in San Antonio’s underground scene. Their high-speed riffs, brutal breakdowns, heavy blast beats, and complex time changes first caught the eye of Sumerian Records in 2007 when the SA natives participated in a national battle-of-the bands contest. Sumerian founder Ash Avildsen — who is widely known for recognizing young talent of the heavier variety — signed UABB to his label in 2009, and the band’s explosive live show has kept mosh pits circling on the national touring circuit ever since.
Though UABB have played in Austin during SXSW before, 2011 marks the first year they’ve been tagged as an official SXSW band. “To us, it’s just another show, but it’s a big one that we are happy to be a part of,” said UABB frontman Danny Leal. “We try to perform the same way every show, because you never know who’s in the audience. With South by Southwest it’s the same thing, just on a higher level, because you don’t know what industry person, clothing line, or gear rep is there. We just have to rock out and impress everybody.”
