Drama at the symphony, y’all.
So, apparently, there were donors (H-E-B, the Tobin Endowment and the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation) set to contribute to the San Antonio Symphony, but backed out of the deal after discovering a potential $8.9 million pension liability, leaving the future of the orchestra in doubt.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, the board that had been running the symphony met last week to discuss the impact on the current season and future of the orchestra.
Basically, the large funders were worried that the Symphony Society wouldn’t stay within budget and after a marathon meeting Wednesday, the board has decided to suspend operations of the orchestra at midnight Sunday and cancel the remainder of the 2017-18 season.
WTF.
Soooo, now we’re not gonna have a San Antonio Symphony?
The San Antonio Symphony’s Tricentennial concerts this weekend will be its final performances. About 40 performances remain on the symphony’s 2017-2018 schedule. There's no word yet as to whether the symphony will resume its schedule if funding will become available. We'll keep you updated.
