THE SOUND & THE FURY

Indie hip-hop is alive and well in San Antonio, and flourishing at The Yard.

This retail shop/music venue, owned by Mic Dagger and co-operated by Dagger and the Prhymemates Collective, has quickly become a local mecca for the four elements. Last week, The Yard welcomed hip-hop journeymen Mestizo, Rheteric, and Qwel, along with San Antonio DJs 7ish and Tech-neek, for a spirited, consciousness-raising evening of alt-rap goodness. Mestizo is touring behind his impressive album Dream State, which masterfully explores the joys and challenges of living in California.

The big news of the evening was that both 7ish and Teck-neek have new projects that are very near completion, and that San Antonio’s hip-hop hot spot is in the process of relocating. Turns out The Yard has already outgrown its near-Southtown digs and will soon be moving to the San Antonio College area on San Pedro Avenue. Plans include setting up the retail component of the venture first and incorporating the music venue over the next few months. Here’s hoping for a smooth transition for an integral part of the city’s hip-hop community that steadily keeps the people’s music flowing.
