Bombasta will take its funked-up cumbias to Sam’s Burger Joint on Friday, May 30, for a special show with Brooklyn-based, Latino indie-folk quartet Pistolera. Fronted by dynamic singer/lefty-guitarist Sandra Lilia Velásquez, Pistolera also includes Sound and Fury favorite Ani Cordero (fiery singer for the band Cordero) on drums. Cordero, who happens to be Velásquez’s cousin, developed her backbeat chops years ago as the drummer for sci-fi bizarros Man or Astroman?

The gig comes at a time when Bombasta is regrouping from the loss of two members: percussionist Jason “JahSon” Pinchback and trumpeter Tony Romero. Pinchback left the band to focus more time on environmental work and Romero relocated to his native Chicago.

Bombasta is filling Pinchback’s timbales with new member Lauro Torres, and they’re welcoming back old trumpet player Jacinto LeFebre on a temporary basis, until they settle on a permanent replacement for Romero.

Pistolera and Bombasta will be joined at Sam’s by Corpus Christi’s new-cumbia trailblazer DJ Dus. The all-ages show starts at 9 p.m., and cover is $8.
