This year’s Huevos Rancheros Gala and Silent Art Auction (9 a.m.-noon Saturday, October 3, at Plaza Guadalupe,1327 Guadalupe St.), an annual benefit for San Anto Cultural Center, is a special one: The late director, Manny Castillo (who passed away in January), will be crowned as King Huevo, and his mother, Rafaela, will be crowned as Queen, with music by Los #3 Dinners and DJ Roach.
“Since his passing, Manny has been honored by the City, Writers Block, friends, and other individuals,” wrote new executive director Heather Eichling in an email to the Current. “All of these tributes have been meaningful, but we wanted to honor him in our own way. There was no question in our minds that Manny would be this year’s King Huevo. It’s another way to show how Manny’s legacy will live on through the organization he created.”
Often, when a beloved leader passes on, the organization he led falls apart. If you judge a tree by its fruit, then today’s SACA is further proof that Manny touched the city’s artistic nerve, and, in the words of those four guys whose work has been recently remastered, “And in the end/the love you take/is equal to the love/you make.” Admission is $35; go to sananto.org for more details.
