Not surprisingly, the Calle 13/Rubén Blades collaboration “La Perla” (a candombe/salsa/rap gem that is the best Latin song of the year, hands down) only got one nomination (Best Video) for the 10th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, which will take place Thursday, November 5, in Las Vegas. Residente, lyricist for the Puerto Rican rap/fusion duo, told the Current that, regardless of the nominations (they’ve already won five Grammys), they’d love to perform the song at the telecast, but only if Blades could be there. They got their wish. The Panamanian salsa star/Harvard grad/actor and former Minister of Tourism will perform with the group, and it will be a showstopper. In case you care, Calle 13 leads the nomination with three (including Album of the Year), followed by up-and-coming singer-songwriter Luz Ríos with two, and a bunch of others (including insufferable David Bisbal, always cool Blades, and Shaila Dúrcal, daughter of the late legendary Rocío) with one. The TV coverage starts at 6 p.m. with the red carpet, but the sort-of-real thing begins at 7 p.m. on Univisión (channel 41). Trust me: Calle 13 with Rubén Blades will be worth the torture. — Enrique Lopetegui
