Thelma and the Sleaze

William Congreve's "Hell hath no fury" line might be the perfect phrase for Southern sludge-punkers Thelma and the Sleaze and their blazing, hard-hitting onslaught of rock ‘n’ roll.

Based in Nashville and fried to their core, Thelma and the Sleaze is about as dirty as mud-wrestling and as seedy as a full-frontal Tennessee strip club (in the most complimentary way possible). Southern rock, as a whole, has notoriously been the stuff of good ol’ boys, but Thelma and the Sleaze turns the genre completely upside down, all while adding grrrl power in the great female punk tradition. But let’s not make this about gender, because Thelma and the Sleaze are about as hardcore as they come, with jams that will sucker punch you to hell.

With four solid EPs, singles and an appropriately titled concert album Greatest Hits Live in their arsenal, Thelma and the Sleaze are as accomplished as they are kick-ass, like the best slow-chugging blues, only with more face-melting riffs and the grittiest of howling. $7, 7pm, Limelight, N St Mary's St., (210) 735-7775
