Artpace: Chalk It Up

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-10-06

We know it’s fun for grownups, too, but Artpace’s yearly festival of chalk has kids scribbled all over it. While the little ones learn artsy new tricks from educator-led activities, lend your creative genius to a collaborative street mural, or head for the Freestyle Section to unlock your inner art-child. Either way, you’ll likely learn new techniques — and decorate Houston Street in the process. Look for sidewalk masterpieces by featured artists Mark Aguilar, Fernando Andrade, Bianca Arguellez, Victoria Campbell, Nate Cassie, Aaron Forland, Joan Frederick, Duane Hilburn, Michelle Love, Michael Menchaca, Jung Hee Mun, Jerrid Rodriguez, Blanquita Sullivan, Chloe Yingst, Johnny Villarreal, and “original work on a monumental scale” by showcase artists Ricky Armendariz, Kim Bishop, Vanessa Centeno, Beto Gonzales, Sarah Jones, Myriam Lanau, Chris Sauter, Leona Scull-Hons, Hills Snyder, and Jeremiah Teutsch. Free (concessions available), 10am-4pm, downtown Houston St (between Main and Jefferson), (210) 212-4900, artpace.org.
