Ballet De Monterrey: New Directions For A New Century

Ballet de Monterrey has been threatening to visit SA for months now. While its production of Don Quixote has been indefinitely postponed due to “passport issues” (stay tuned to artssanantonio.com for updates), the vibrant young company has been given a green light to perform a mixed program titled New Directions for a New Century, which highlights classical works with a modern twist. Among the pieces are “Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux” (from Act III of Swan Lake), the 2002 duet “Perfidia,” and “Danzón,” which involves seemingly weightless female dancers suspended in mid-leap courtesy of their male partners. In the past, the Ballet de Monterrey, which is presently under the direction of Cuban dancer Luis Serrano, has been known to dress members in spooky Día de los Muertos masks and pageboy wigs, and — according to the New York Times — take stylistic cues from the movie Tron. So, much like Off Center (our Dance Month pick from last week), New Directions for a New Century promises to take ballet out of its stuffy old box and give it an exotic fresh spin.
