Rick Perry got a little crossed up on his phrasing on Fox News.

Poor Rick Perry.

It’s been a tough few weeks for the former governor of Texas and Republican presidential hopeful. It came out in early August that Perry would no longer pay his campaign staff. CNN predicted that Perry is the most likely Republican candidate to drop out of the race first. This week, reports surfaced that Perry had no staff in New Hampshire, a key early-primary state.

And Thursday, he dropped a classic in response to Donald Trump saying that Perry would end his campaign soon.

“One of the things that I'm most honored about is that so far everybody who’s attacked me has gone down the tubes,” Trump said in a press conference. “You had Perry attacking me, now he’s getting out of the race.”

Perry responded to Trump on Fox News with this gem:

“A broken clock is right once a day, so the bottom line is I’m still here and I’m still working.”

Here's the video of Perry making that comment, via Fox News:

Perry clearly misspoke. The saying is “even a broken clock is right twice a day.” But let’s set that aside for a minute.

Even if he had used the correct phrase, what was he trying to say? That Trump was correct, that he is dropping out of the race? That’s obviously not the case. It’s a non-sequitur, he could have said anything. Either that, or he's unclear on how clocks work. That's totally possible — everyone knows that Perry's been a sundial man for years.

It’s worth noting though that later in the interview, Perry made some pretty salient points poking holes in Trump’s idea to build a wall along the southern border.

“I know the private property rights that are along that border, I know the cost, I know the time that it would take to build it,” Perry said. “Is there a better way to secure the border? I would suggest that there is….if we’ll have a thoughtful conversation rather than just blowing out rhetoric and saying we’re going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it.”

Rick Perry: voice of reason. Thanks Trump.
