Dia De Los Ninos

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-04-27

With roots as far back as 1860, the observation of Children’s Day ? for which a national date has never officially been set ? predates the celebrations that honor moms and pops. With a focus on “literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds,” the local chapter of REFORMA (the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking), the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, and Scholastic join forces to present an early evening of free, thought-provoking fun. Among the activities are The Magik Theatre’s adaptation of Laura Numeroff’s children’s book If You Give a Pig a Party (5:30-6:15 p.m.), a “Ronald McDonald Magic Show” (6:30-7 p.m.), storytelling and book giveaways on the Scholastic Literacy Caravan, a performance by the Guadalupe Dance Academy, interactive arts and crafts projects led by reps from the San Antonio Children’s Museum, the San Antonio Public Library, and the Little Read Wagon, and refreshments to keep the little gears turning. Free, 5:30-7:30pm, Guadalupe Theater, 1301 Guadalupe, (210) 271-3151, guadalupeculturalarts.org.
