The first of two Fiesta-approved charreadas is set to kick up dust at Charro Ranch on Sunday. An organized tradition in Mexico since 1921 (when the preservation-minded Asociación Nacional de Charros was founded) charreadas typically include nine scored equestrian events for men and one for women (the escaramuza, which translates to “skirmish”). With a cold cerveza in hand, settle into a seat in the bleachers for a spectacle that celebrates age-old customs via trick roping, mariachis, ballet folklórico, period clothing, and a synchronized performance by the escaramuza team, which never fails to make riding sidesaddle in Adelita dresses look effortless and graceful. $15 (free for children under 12), 1-6pm, Charro Ranch, 6126 Padre, sacharro.com.
