Governor Greg Abbott Orders Planned Parenthood Investigation

After an anti-abortion group released what Planned Parenthood says is a heavily edited video on YouTube, Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Texas Attorney General to investigate the organization.

“The video of a high-level Planned Parenthood executive discussing the details of internal abortion procedures – including harvesting of baby body parts – is unnerving and appalling," Abbott says in a statement.

In the video, Planned Parenthood's senior director of medical research, Deborah Nucatola, talks about obtaining organs from fetuses.

The anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress posed as tissue buyers in the video.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America Vice President of Communications Eric Ferrero says women who have abortions are able to donate tissue for scientific research, just like any other field of health care.

According to Ferrero, this isn't the first time abortion opponents have made what he calls false accusations.

“A well funded group established for the purpose of damaging Planned Parenthood’s mission and services has promoted a heavily edited, secretly recorded videotape that falsely portrays Planned Parenthood’s participation in tissue donation programs that support lifesaving scientific research," he says in a press release. "Similar false accusations have been put forth by opponents of abortion services for decades. These groups have been widely discredited and their claims fall apart on closer examination, just as they do in this case.”
