A San Antonio man is facing additional charges after authorities caught him trying to escape from Bexar County Jail.
Matthew Fields snuck out of his cell, climbed into the ceiling and lowered himself into a stairwell in order to escape custody. He didn't get very far, though, as the Bexar County Sheriff's Office told reporters that Fields ran all the way up the stairs from the basement to the seventh floor, where he was apprehended by deputies.
Still, authorities had to use force on the 24-year-old, including a Taser, to finally subdue him. According to a press release, Fields made quite a mess during his attempted escape. While in a stairwell, he opened a sprinkler valve, causing flooding in parts of the basement.
Two deputies also suffered minor injuries while going after Fields in the ceiling. What's more, KSAT reports that the inmate bit a sheriff's deputy in an unrelated incident earlier this week.
Fields' new charges include possible escape and criminal mischief. He was originally booked into the jail Tuesday on a criminal trespass charge. The sheriff's office clarified in a press release that Fields was never a threat to the public — just not the smartest inmate.
