International Women's Day March

Release Date: 2009-03-04

San Antonio women will march in solidarity with those around the globe Saturday, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of International Woman’s Day. This year’s theme, Mujeres: Roots of Change, Voces de Conciencia, reclaims the legacy and responsibility of women’s successes throughout history. In a 2007 lawsuit, members of the IWD March Planning Committee and the SA Free Speech Coalition filed a lawsuit against the City, charging that officials are given too much discretion when it comes to charging fees for events concerning freedom of assembly and free speech. “The City basically tried to buy us out when we started fighting by saying they’d make the `Woman’s Day` march free,” said Esperanza spokeswoman Genevieve Rodrigez. “But we said nobody should have to pay.” Due to the current injunction, Saturday’s march is free, but organizers have heard rumors that the City could charge retroactively should the judge rule in their favor. March begins at 10 a.m. in Travis Park, 230 E. Travis, and continues to Milam Park, 343 W. Houston, where the rally commences. Official after party: $5, 8pm, The Cove, 606 W. Cypress. Info: (210) 228-0201.
