Whether they’re building freaky-realistic robots while we’re still trying to install the batteries in our Big Mouth Billy Basses, or turning a convicted murderer and cannibal into a national celebrity years before The Simple Life hit American airwaves, Japan seems to always be ahead of the curve. Hell, just look at a picture of downtown Tokyo and tell me it doesn’t look exactly like the set of Back to the Future Part II. So go ahead and expect Japan-born, NYC-based band Peelander-Z to be the face of American music circa 2015. This trio — Peelander-Yellow, Peelander-Red, and Peelander-Green — play what they like to call “Japan action comic punk,” which as best I can figure means lots of animal-print spandex and song titles with multiple exclamation points. Picture the Power Rangers with musical instruments and Ramone fetishes and you’ve got a decent idea. To put it another way, they have a song called “Ninja High Schooool,” and it’s somehow nearly as cool as it sounds. Pick up a copy of their latest album, P-Pop-High-School, at the show, and see if they’ll loan you their copy of Grays Sports Almanac while you’re at it.
