Mack Breed, an assistant football coach at John Jay High School, has been placed on paid administrative leave today after he may have told players to intentionally hit a referee during Friday's game, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Northside Independent School District officials said that Breed allegedly suggested that players ram into one of the referees officiating Jay's game against Marble Falls High School.
“This guy needs to pay for cheating us,” Breed allegedly said.
Breed's suspension is standard procedure for a situation such as this, according to NISD officials.
The district will hold a disciplinary hearing for the two players who struck the official. They may also face criminal charges.
NISD officials also said that they are filing a complaint with the Texas Association of Sports Officials due to claims that the referee made racial slurs during the game, according to KENS-5. The referee, whose identity is unclear, refuted those claims in this statement:
"I like to keep my officiating quiet; unfortunately this will be big news,” the referee said according to Texas High School Football. "Libel and slander have already been committed against me. I will be contacting the appropriate people soon and any statement from me will come at a later date.”
Multiple entities, including the University Interscholastic League, NISD and the Marble Falls Police Department are investigating the incident.
