For her critically acclaimed trio of one-woman plays, writer/director/performer Adelina Anthony assumes the roles of “La Angry Chicana?!,” “La Sad Girl…,” and “La Chismosa!!!,” which are also the titles (including the dramatic punctuation) of the three pieces that make up La Hocicona Series: An Original X-X-Xicana Comedic Triptych of Scandalous Proportions. Using comedy as a “weapon of choice,” Anthony “examines possible sources of contemporary and historical anger among womyn of color,” “turns the political tables on homophobia, higher education, anti-immigration, and Xicanas who date by tribe,” and “takes on migratory border issues, Facebook chisme, single motherhood, `and` mental issues for Xicanas who may be a wee bit paranoid.” Over the last 20 years, Anthony has worked as a cultural activist (including co-designing and co-leading community projects with queer and undocumented immigrant youth), an educator (mentoring LGBT youth and youth of color by teaching acting, creative writing, and “political teatro”), and a touring artist known for diversifying the theatrical landscape with solo performances such as Requiem for Queer Amor, Bruising for Besos, and Mastering Sex & Tortillas!, an “unflinching examination of Xicana/Latina lesbian sexuality” that won the Mejor Unipersonal de Premios Sin Limite Award in New York in 2008. Of the SA native currently based in the Bay Area the Los Angeles Times’ F. Kathleen Foley wrote, “Anthony is a striking performer with to-die-for cheekbones that could chop firewood … Indeed, Anthony concocts such sizzling sexual chemistry with herself you forget there’s only one person on stage.” In advance: $18 for one show; $45 for all three.
