For those bemoaning a lack of epic hipster summer jams this year, Major Lazer offers salvation on this brief EP. DJ demigod Diplo again ditches baile funk for Jamaican dancehall in collaboration with UK fidget-house fiend DJ Switch on their second collaboration as Major Lazer. While M.I.A. turns up on the first track (unsurprising given her long professional ties to both producers), the real hit comes via Portuguese electro group Buraka Som Sistema and their six-minute, up-tempo reggae rave-up mix “Bruk Out.” It combines brilliant, sexy raps with a nostalgic nursery-rhyme melody designed to double glow-stick sales. If that song (and the chemical entertainment it may inspire) gets the heart rate up to 1,000 bpm, tone it down with Thom Yorke (yes, that Thom Yorke) and his warm and fuzzy remix of “Jump Up.” Despite militant commands to “jump up, jump up, jump up, yeah!” the sci-fi wobbling and steady pace are just enough to bring the club kids down, in a good way.
