Melt Banana w/ All Leather, Yoshimoto, Kick it!, & Of My Redemption

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2009-11-04

The trick to good noise rock isn’t overloading your amplifier, it’s making sure the noise you’re making is as interesting as it is loud. Tokyo’s Melt-Banana achieve that largely by knowing how the instruments they play work. Guitarist Ichirou Agata is a master of guitar torture, constantly coaxing new squeals and screeches from his six-string, and bassist Rika Hamamoto expertly pounds them into a mostly recognizable rhythm for whoever they’ve got playing live drums to twist and warp. But singer Yasuko Onuki’s energetic yip keeps the weirdness relatively human (or at least carbon-based) by never quite regressing to a plain-old scream. Melt-Banana play noise-rock as punk’s natural progression to a louder, faster, weirder form, and they’ve got a strange, aggressive, but overall fun live show to match. Rock Bottom deserves credit not only for grabbing M-B on their way out of Austin, but also for putting together a badass local undercard featuring Yoshimoto, We the Granada, Ill Prospekt, and Kick It! Earplugs are almost essential, but so’s this show. $10, 7pm Sun, Nov 8, Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar, 1033 Ave B, — Jeremy Martin
