Mission San Jose Neighborhood Association Opposes Plan For Apartment Complex

The Southside Alliance of Neighborhoods will meet with District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran Tuesday night to give her petitions of opposition to the development of apartments by Missions Concepcion and San Jose.

Terry A. Ybanez, a local artist and educator who is a member of the Mission San Jose Neighborhood Association, says the planned apartment complex isn't appropriate for the area.

"We are not against development in District 3 or the Southside, but we do not want inappropriate development to encroach on the Missions grounds," Ybanez says in an email.

210 Developers is planning the apartment complex.

Ybanez said the there are plenty of other areas on the South Side that would be better for development, instead of areas close to the Missions.

"With all the properties on Roosevelt and Military Dr. that are for sale and appropriate locations to choose from why do the 210 developers want to build right next to the Missions," Ybanez asked, alleging that the city wants to create a Pearl Brewery-type footprint in the area.

Viagran recently told the San Antonio Current that she will be cautious about the plans for the apartment complex.

"I am going to err on the side of caution and I'm going to be very careful as we move forward with whatever development comes around this area," Viagran said. "And so, that's really my mindset. But to stop any and all construction near the Missions? I think that would be doing ourselves a disservice."

The San Antonio Missions were granted World Heritage Status in July, which makes scrutiny of development around the Missions important as rapid unchecked urban development can threaten that designation.

The Southside Alliance of Neighborhoods will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Mission Library to hear from Viagran and to hand over the petitions.
