This two-disc retrospective is not another greatest hits re-packaging but rather what Santana calls “a letter to the fans … an invitation to the sacredness inside yourself.” The legendary guitarist handpicked each tune, with the first disc featuring vocal songs and the second disc being all instrumental.
Opening with a trinity of songs titled “Let There be Light,” “Brotherhood,” and “Spirit,” Santana conjures a strong message of positivity to counterbalance the darkness of the times. Most of the tunes come from the past 25 years, and a few suffer from the cheesy synth sounds that plagued popular music in the ’80s. Some songs, likewise, will stray too close to the new-age side for certain tastes. But what comes through loud and clear throughout is that sweet tone that’s made Santana one of the most recognizable guitarists in music.
A more truly multi-dimensional experience would be found on a release like Live at the Fillmore 1968, but Multi Dimensional Warrior offers some of Santana’s tastiest playing in songs written with specific metaphysical intentions.
