Details of a father committing a robbery and assaulting a police officer in front of his 9-year-old daughter have emerged after neighbors who witnessed the incident spoke to local TV stations.
Police say 42-year-old Alexander Garza on Tuesday morning broke into a home and assaulted a man inside
with his daughter in tow. Giovanna Rojas told KSAT
that her 3-year-old nephew opened the door when Garza knocked on their door, and that her sister ran to shut and lock the door. Rojas said Garza was looking for someone named Jill and asked her sister to show her face when police pulled up to the home and attempted to use a Taser on the suspect.
"He got up and started attacking the cop and started punching her," Rojas told KSAT. "I think at one point he flipped her
, and that's when she ended up on my sister's car."
Neighbor Ruben Gonzalez said the officer, a female cop with nearly two decades on the force, chased the suspect down the street before eventually collapsing. KSAT reports that the officer suffered a concussion
and facial fractures.
Garza and his daughter were able to walk to another house before backup officers arrived on the scene and pinned him down. Gonzalez said he heard a little girl screaming.
Garza has been charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and criminal trespass
. His daughter is now in CPS custody.
