Early voting, propaganda from your government, and where's the vision
Get thee to the polls:
Early voting begins Tuesday, May 31 for the City Council Districts 6 and 7 and mayoral runoffs. If you're a political Rip Van Winkle, wake up, because Lila Cockrell is no longer mayor. However, outgoing District 7 Councilman Julián Castro and retired state judge Phil Hardberger are running for SA's top spot. Community activist Delicia Herrera vies for District 6 against Ray Lopez, well-funded friend of the developers. In District 7, retired social worker Elena Guajardo goes head-to-head with Noel Suniga, a member of the Woodlawn Development Board. Election Day (again) is June 7.

The military's media-relations specialists were kind enough to send the Current a "story" about soldiers from Fort Sam Houston teaching Iraqi Security Forces to solve their own problems. With a dateline of Taji, Iraq, the fluff piece came from the DVIDS Digital Video & Distribution System Supporting the Coalition Forces Land Component Command. "We're here to show them what right looks like," one soldier was quoted as saying. And we're here to thwart government propaganda.
Where's the vision?:
It's doubtful that contamination from the former Kelly Air Force Base will be on the list of issues at a Neighborhood Conference at KellyUSA, which sits right over the plume. However, the conference will include such topics as neighborhood planning, water, and the media.
At 9:30 a.m., the Bexar County Congressional delegation has been invited to participate in a breakout session, followed by an 11 a.m. state legislative issues forum. Former Mayor Howard Peak will host the lunch program, consisting of a "visioning" discussion, which is public-relations speak for "planning." Mayor Ed Garza, the two mayoral candidates, current City Council members, and members-elect have been invited to attend. The visioning happens Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at KellyUSA's Administration Building 171. It is free and open to the public. Info: nrc-sa.org or 735-0586.
