Officials Blame Rivercenter Evacuation on Grease Fire

Smoke filled the San Antonio skyline Tuesday after a fire at the downtown Shops at Rivercenter. According to Express-News, no one was injured, but hundreds of people were evacuated from the complex, including guests at the 38-story Marriott Riverwalk Hotel.

San Antonio Fire Department told Express-News they believed the flames started as a grease fire and then burned their way through the ducts. Firefighters focused their efforts in the area between Tony Roma's and Luciano, working between 11:40 a.m. until the fire was finally extinguished by 4 p.m.

"[It was] really frustrating. It was just stubborn [what] we had to go through," Fire Department spokesman Joe Arrington told KSAT. "Our crews were going through and exposing ductwork continually."

All told, 45 units responded to the fire, which shut down the mall for the rest of the day.
