U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has removed a 19-year-old Honduran woman who tried to commit suicide last week from the Karnes Family Detention Center, according to the non-profit group of attorneys representing her.
Lilian Yamileth Olivia-Bardales was last seen being shuttled from the Karnes facility at about 5 a.m. on Monday, June 8, according to a news release from the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services.
RAICES said her attorneys were not informed that she was being moved. ICE has detained Olivia and her 4-year-old son since October. A judge order them to be deported in February, a decision that was affirmed in May when Olivia lost her appeal.
Olivia fled Honduras with her son after facing rape and death threats. Her suicide note, according to McClatchy, said that her experience in the detention center was “killing [her] little by little.”
“I write this letter so you know how it feels to be in this damn place for eight months,” Oliva wrote in Spanish.
ICE officials downplayed Olivia’s attempt on Thursday, calling her injury a non-life threatening “surface level abrasion.” But Karnes Assistant Field Office Director Jose Longoria told Olivia’s attorney that she had “lost a lot of blood.”
