While San Antonio bills itself as meeting national "Smoke Free City" standards, puffing on a cigarette at Main Plaza in the heart of downtown is perfectly legal.
The city, however, may amend its smoking ordinance to prohibit smoking in Main Plaza, by the San Fernando Cathedral and at Travis Park.
The Center City Development & Operations recommended the changes Monday at the Neighborhoods and Livability Committee, according to online agenda records.
You're already not allowed to smoke at the San Antonio Zoo; in all outdoor sports arenas, stadiums and amphitheaters; at pavilions and playgrounds located in city-owned parks; in and within 2- feet of public transit stations, platforms and shelters under the city's authority; or within the public right-of-way or in an seating along the Fiesta Battle of Flowers Parade, the Fiesta Flambeau Parade and the Texas Cavaliers River Parade.
The request comes after the Main Plaza Conservancy asked the city to prohibit smoking at Main Plaza and Portal San Fernando Cathedral earlier this year. The cathedral supports the request, according to the city.
For this to become reality, the City Council would have to vote to amend the smoking ordinance.
