Mariachi Los Caporales was invited by the Mexican government to represent the country at last week’s World Cup game in Moscow. The group’s traditional mariachi music brought a taste of San Antonio to the streets of Russia as Mexico claimed a victory over Germany.
“For the government of Mexico to recognize us from San Antonio to represent Mexico is an honor in itself. We’re very happy to be part of this event,” said band member Roy Quintero.
This is the group’s third time to be invited to a World Cup, but this year’s visit hit a more personal note. After Mexico’s big win, the band’s performance turned into a celebration of not only the team, but of Mexican culture as well.
“It’s just amazing to see so many different cultures and countries being represented around the world and unanimously, they all enjoy mariachi music,” group member Rhonda Garcia said.
In an interview with KSAT, Los Caporales announced that they will be attending the next World Cup in Qatar in four years. The group will remain in Russia for the duration of the World Cup.
Mexico will face South Korea this Saturday at 10 a.m.
