Five-year-old San Japan is dedicated to “bringing Japanese cultural awareness to San Antonio.” Although anime (and vendors of all things manga) is the basis for a lot of what goes on at San Japan, the convention includes panels (the history of kimonos, Asian horror films, and the Steampunk and Neo-Victoriana movements are but a few of the topics), gaming, karaoke, cosplay presentations (including a live chess match), fashion shows, makeup and photography seminars, “pose-offs,” concerts, demonstrations, and late-night dances. Among this year’s special guests are SA’s own the Loliholix (a J-rock band), KESHIKI (a Tokyo-based screamo band), the Protomen (pictured), and numerous actors who bend their voices to portray animated characters.
