San Japan: 3

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-07-07

Five-year-old San Japan is dedicated to “bringing Japanese cultural awareness to San Antonio.” Although anime (and vendors of all things manga) is the basis for a lot of what goes on at San Japan, the convention includes panels (the history of kimonos, Asian horror films, and the Steampunk and Neo-Victoriana movements are but a few of the topics), gaming, karaoke, cosplay presentations (including a live chess match), fashion shows, makeup and photography seminars, “pose-offs,” concerts, demonstrations, and late-night dances. Among this year’s special guests are SA’s own the Loliholix (a J-rock band), KESHIKI (a Tokyo-based screamo band), the Protomen (pictured), and numerous actors who bend their voices to portray animated characters. For a full schedule of activities, visit san-japan.org. Three-day pass: $45; one-day pass for Friday or Saturday: $30; one-day pass for Sunday: $20; 10am-midnight Friday & Saturday, noon-6pm Sunday, Marriott Rivercenter, 101 Bowie St., san-japan.org
