Spurs Sports and Entertainment will make a major announcement tomorrow about the city's new professional soccer team, but South Texas fans of the beautiful game will have to wait for other key details, including the club's name.

The Spurs group tweeted today that it would make major announcements at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 7 about the team, which will play in the third-tier United Soccer League:
The Orlando Sentinel reported today that the new coach will be Darren Powell, who coached youth academy clubs for Orlando City of Major League Soccer. Calls and emails to both the Spurs and Powell to confirm this were not returned.

The announcement will include Jake Edwards, president of the USL, "officially welcoming San Antonio to the league for the 2016 season," according to a press release. Playing in the USL, which is officially affiliated with Major League Soccer, is part of the Spurs' plan to eventually secure an MLS franchise.

The presentation won't include any details about the new franchise's name or logo, according to Carlos Manzanillo, a spokesman for Spurs Sports and Entertainment. A letter sent from the organization to season ticket holders last week said that team name would be announced in January.
