The Fiesta force is with you, San Antonio.
In early April, State Rep. Diego Bernal announced his office was giving away Star Wars-themed Fiesta medals wrapped in San Anto flair for free. The only catch? Donate some food for the San Antonio Food Bank.
"Our office had planned to give away 500 of our Fiesta medals (at most) in exchange for donations for the San Antonio Food Bank. We ended up giving away 850 medals and filling our office with donations," Bernal says in an email to constituents. "The line to donate wrapped around our building and into a neighboring apartment complex, with some of our amazing constituents waiting for two hours."
In just two hours, people donated eight bins totaling 5,195 pounds of food that equates to 4,156 meals, according to the San Antonio Food Bank.
Bernal said hunger is a daunting problem and there's much to be done, but the charitable showing gave him new hope.
"But now, it's Fiesta time! I hope to see you out there celebrating this city with me. Have fun and stay safe," he says.
